George Papageorgiou

George Papageorgiou is a Co-Founder and Director of Epoch Resources (Pty) Ltd (Epoch) and is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. His particular areas of interest and expertise include design and project management of mine residue deposits, liquefaction and flow slide assessments, and storm water management. 

George has worked in the mining related sector since 1994 specialising in the field of mine residue disposal and specifically in the design, on-going monitoring and associated environmental impacts of tailings dams.

George’s post graduate studies are in the fields of unsaturated soils, liquefaction and flow slide failures. George was previously a senior consultant and Director at a consulting engineering company before leaving to co-found Epoch in 2005.

George has been involved in mine residue disposal projects in South Africa and internationally, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Australia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana, Liberia, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Armenia, Georgia, Tanzania, Angola and Algeria.

His experience ranges from pre-feasibility through to detail design, construction supervision and on-going monitoring of mine residue facilities, probabilistic water and salt balances, tailings dam seepage assessments, liquefaction and flow slide assessments, storm water management and design, due diligences and technical reviews.

In addition to the technical aspects of mine residue facilities, George has been involved in Environmental Impact Assessments and Environmental Management Reports, providing input on aspects pertaining to mine residue disposal such as seepage assessments, environmental management measures, closure, hydrology, storm water management and overall mine water balances.

George has worked on various projects and commodities for a variety of local and international companies including Randgold Resources, Goldfields, Tati Nickel, Endeavour Mining, DeBeers, Aureus Mining, B2Gold, Shanta Gold, Glencor, DRA and Senet.
